A Priority for James Martin MP

A Brighter Future for Students through our Great Schools

We have some amazing schools in our Stretton electorate and I want to ensure that our schools continue to provide a great education and top-class facilities for our local students.

Since being elected I’ve made it a priority to get to know our local parents and students, as well as teachers, principals, wider school staff and volunteers, and our fantastic PCYCs.

Investing in local schools

Every student deserves a great education and the Palaszczuk Government is investing in our local schools to ensure every student has a bright future ahead.

Locally we’ve provided $23.7million for new classrooms, science blocks, building upgrades and expansion of Outside School Hours Care.

Here are some local school projects I’m proud to have helped deliver:

  • $200,000 for sports hall renewal at Stretton State College.
  • $300,000 for the expansion of Outside School Hours Care at Runcorn Heights State School.
  • $450,000 for refurbished learning spaces at Kuraby State School.
  • $600,000 for site renewal and refurbishment of classrooms at Kuraby Special School.
  • School Subsidy Scheme funding for the Kuraby Special School Thrift Shop that gives special needs students fantastic retail skills and training.
  • A new playground at Kuraby Special School.
  • $850,000 for maintenance and minor works projects across local schools.
  • $1,105,000 for new administration building and other classroom upgrades at Runcorn Heights State School.
  • $2,530,000 for new buildings at Runcorn State High School.
  • $12 million multi-year investment for new classrooms at Stretton State College including a new state-of-the-art learning centre for Prep students.
  • A new $13.1 million two-storey learning centre block including 19 classrooms, nine breakout spaces, five outdoor learning areas, five practical learning areas and a flexible learning space for Sunnybank Hills State School.
  • State-of-the-art Duncan Pegg Performing Arts Centre at Stretton State College.

Amazing NAPLAN results at Sunnybank Hills State School

Recently I gave my congratulations to everyone at Sunnybank Hills State School, which this year had the highest NAPLAN score on the southside and one of the highest in the state.

Sunnybank Hills State School is listed as the highest-achieving primary school in Queensland, which is a testament to the exceptional quality of teaching in our area.

Well done to all the teachers, students and families on such an incredible result.

Air-conditioning in every school

The Palaszczuk Government has delivered on its promise to air-condition every classroom in every state school in Queensland. This is an important project that helps keep students and teachers comfortable during the warmer months to support their learning.

We’ve also had the installation of more than 200,000 solar panels in 912 schools across Queensland, including 1,804 right here in Stretton!

This project has provided $26 million in savings on electricity bills – enough renewable energy to power 25,000 homes and over 1,000 jobs.

And 550 of these solar panels are now up and running at Runcorn State High School.

It’s a huge achievement that we’ve managed to air-condition every school  – including here in the Stretton electorate  – and I’m proud to say we’ve delivered it under a Palaszczuk Government.
